Musically educated as a singer in a boy’s choir, Simon Rummel studied jazz-piano with John Taylor, composition with Johannes Fritsch, and later on, visual art / sculpture with Georg Herold at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He lives in Cologne where he conducts some amateur-choirs and plays the organ each sunday in a little church in the suburbs. He is as a musician-performer, mostly for dance pieces, and sometimes writes film music. Many of his compositions focus on microtonality; this includes building microtonal instruments, which have got a sculptural facet as well.
His “Simon Rummel Ensemble” unites musicians and improvisers of various musical backgrounds to explore and develop some of his compositions over time.
