Depuis 2011, le Umlaut Big Band s\u2019est fait une spe\u0301cialite\u0301 de remonter aux premie\u0300res de\u0301cennies du jazz afin de faire revivre la musique des grands orchestres de cette e\u0301poque, tout en passant commande a\u0300 des compositeurs contemporains d\u2019\u0153uvres nouvelles.<\/p>\n

Apre\u0300s un travail sur Don Redman en 2018, le Umlaut Big Band poursuit sa se\u0301rie de portraits des compositeurs- arrangeurs oublie\u0301s en s’inte\u0301ressant a\u0300 l’oeuvre de Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981), musicienne prolifique qui a traverse\u0301 l’histoire du jazz, toujours perme\u0301able a\u0300 ses transformations.<\/p>\n

D’abord pianiste et arrangeuse prolifique pour l’orchestre d’Andy Kirk, celle qui suscita la curiosite\u0301 du public – car rares e\u0301taient les femmes instrumentistes dans ce milieu masculin – devint dans les anne\u0301es 1940 la mentore de Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell et Dizzy Gillespie. Elle e\u0301crivit a\u0300 de nombreuses reprises pour Duke Ellington et Benny Goodman, elle collabora avec Cecil Taylor, Shafi Hadi ou Buster Williams dans les anne\u0301es 1970.<\/p>\n

Les archives personnelles de Mary Lou Williams, conserve\u0301es a\u0300 l’Institute of Jazz Studies de Newark portent en elles les traces de cette trajectoire foisonnante. Ces manuscrits originaux ont servi de source principale a\u0300 ce projet qui s\u2019appuie sur une recherche historique. Ainsi, le Umlaut Big Band donne vie a\u0300 de nombreuses compositions e\u0301crites entre 1930 et 1981, jusqu’ici ine\u0301dites sur disque.<\/p>\n

Il s’agit donc, pour la premie\u0300re fois, de conside\u0301rer l’oeuvre de Mary Lou Williams dans son ensemble. Cet album a e\u0301te\u0301 conc\u0327u autour de the\u0301matiques spe\u0301cifiques a\u0300 sa pratique musicale : son rapport au blues, l’influence de Kansas City, la re\u0301e\u0301criture et la re\u0301invention d’oeuvres anciennes, l’expression d’un point de vue sur l’histoire et un rapport a\u0300 la jeunesse. Une lecture qui, nous l’espe\u0301rons, permettra un e\u0301clairage nouveau sur une figure injustement ne\u0301glige\u0301e.<\/p>\n
