Umlaut Berlin

Thursday, 16/02/2012, 19:30 Ballhaus Ost, Pappelallee 15, 10437 Berlin 10/6€ (show starts 20h sharp!)

Hannes Lingens - for six snare drums
Antonin Gerbal, Steve Heather, Didier Lasserre, Hannes Lingens, Christian Marien, Morten J. Olsen - snare drum

Berlin based drummer Hannes Lingens deals in his compositions with the influence of the visual on the musical form. Proportions and spatial processes have been elaborated by drawing studies.

Perspectives
Kajsa Bohlin - performance
Pierre Borel - saxophone
Hannes Lingens - percussion
Oscar Loeser - video
Florian Bergmann - concept / director

"Perspectives" is an interdisciplinary performance about the viewpoint as the permanent companion of every person. The way we perceive our environment, the people around us and ourselves is inseparable from the perspective we find ourselves in. "Perspectives" stretches out microcosms of perception, which are enriched by constant change of perspective. The well-structured interplay of performance, live music, video projection and sound direction creates unexpected spaces and situations in which the performers are free to move in improvisation.

Frictions
Jonas Kocher – composition, director
Barblina Meierhans – viola, voice
Aurélien Ferrette – cello, voice
Markus Brunn - light
Benno Muheim - dramaturgical support
production of the Association Suisse Théâtre Musical - ASTM

FRICTIONS is an investigation of the phenomenon sound and the movement that can emerge from it. Gestures, sounds and voice build layers, attract each other or oppose all reference. Reduced sediments of sound call memories within us, abstract mostly, explore the visual and audio material concerning its intersections and fractions, bringing poetical substance to the surface. Following the traces of the traditional Théâtre Musical (Kagel, Schnebel, Cage, Aperghis) and based on the atmospheric yet abstract texts by Georges Aperghis, FRICTIONS explores new and original ways in sound and performance.

Ensemble Hodos plays Cage, Wolff & Corner
Pierre-Antoine Badaroux - saxophone
Félicie Bazelaire - cello
Sebastien Beliah - double bass
François Michel - guitar
Joris Rühl - clarinet

The main idea of this program is to present a reading of the American experimentalists lineage, through the figure of John Cage (1912-1992) as a teacher and mentor for two other american musicians: Philip Corner (1933-) and Christian Wolff (1934-). They both have been digging, in their own way, paths opened by John Cage: Corner giving a special concern to freedom to the performer in his scores, while not giving up expressivity, and Wolff looking more towards the social implications of the music making. Interested in having a creative approach to the repertoire, the Ensemble Hodos will present their own reading of these uncommon and rarely performed pieces.

John Cage – Four6 (1992)
Christian Wolff – Microexercices (2006)
Christian Wolff – Pairs (1968)
Philip Corner – tba

Didier Lasserre - sur quelque surfaces vacantes
Didier Lasserre - percussion

Farther along academicisms, sectarianisms and programmed violence, Didier Lasserre is a rare musician in every sense (witness his works and performances, often limited to limited editions and featuring a single cymbal and drum): a poet and a painter of the drums (both literally and figuratively), and a gourmet for idiophones, for a music which is “the unexpected and the revelatory, the daughter of moment and eternity” (Pierre Lemarchand)
Philippe Carles, Le nouveau dictionnaire du Jazz

Burkhard Beins & Derek Shirley
Burkhard Beins - synthesizer, live electronics
Derek Shirley - bass synthesizer

Well known for their acoustic work as percussionist / double bassist in groups like Activity Center, Phosphor, Hotelgäste and Obliq, these two Berlin Improvisors give a rare electroacoustic duo performance.

Johnny Chang and Koen Nutters curate the concert series "Konzert Minimal", in which Berlin-based musicians from the experimental music community are invited to explore the boundary between listening and perceptions through silence, tones, harmonies and space in the scores of composers connected to the "Wandelweiser" group.

Peeping Tom
Pierre-Antoine Badaroux - saxophone
Axel Dörner - trumpet
Joel Grip - double bass
Antonin Gerbal - drums

This French-Swedish-German quartet peeps back in time, deeply inspired by the energies of be-boppers like C. Parker, B. Powell, H. Nichols and D. Gillespie. And by giving an up-to-date attention to their compositions, Peeping Tom tear jazz down to its bare bones and refurbish it with the new blossom of free-bop. Peeping Tom's fresh and spontaneous approach in developing their particular music is provoking collaborations with artists from different areas and eras such as Evan Parker, Alan Silva, David Stackenäs, and Sven-Åke Johansson.

moment decides
place inspires

to drive - to receive
to seduce strings
to understand bodies
to move air

to take earth

Borel/Dörner/Grip/Johansson
Pierre Borel - saxophone
Axel Dörner - trumpet
Joel Grip - double bass
Sven-Åke Johansson - drums

Pierre Borel, Axel Dörner, Joel Grip and Sven-Åke Johansson are all well known figures in the European, Asian or North American music scenes. The four musicians of different generations can be called outstanding, bordercrossing sound researchers and have performed in different constellations. They focus on improvisation and sound, interaction and confrontation, impulse and reaction, intense observation and dispersive silence with an open direction.
