Fenêtre Ovale

Karl Naegelen et le duo Risser / Rühl et se sont associés autour d’un un goût partagé pour la recherche de nouveaux sons et les illusions sonores. Introduire la confusion des sources, suggérer différents espaces acoustiques, évoquer le son d’une machine à tricoter ou d’une bande d’arrêt d’urgence, faire passer un frottement pour un souffle et un souffle pour un grincement, telles sont les envies qui ont stimulé la recherche collective. Il a donc fallu que le piano à queue devienne un instrument à vent et que la clarinette devienne un instrument aqueux ; que la pianiste joue des percussions sur une flûte et que le clarinettiste fasse de la flûte de pan dans un orgue à bouche laotien; il a fallu tester des bassines de différents diamètres et des carrés de velours de finesses variées, privilégier des piles à moitié vides pour le vibromasseur, dérouler la bobine de cuivre d’un moteur électrique pour obtenir le fil métallique de l’épaisseur souhaitée. D’inventions en découvertes, de surprises en déconvenues, l’histoire de ce projet est aussi liée à cette quête alchimique, dérisoire et palpitante, de nouvelles sonorités.

 

 

 

The « Fenêtre Ovale », or oval window, is the membrane that marks the limit between the middle and the inner ear. We see it as the boundary between mechanics and imagination, the very precise place of transition between acoustics and psycho acoustics, between the physical nature of a wave and its subjective perception. It takes two to make a sound: the musician that produces it with a craftsman's gesture and the listener who polishes it with his dreams and images. 

 

Karl Naegelen and the Risser/Rühl duo share a common interest in the quest for new sounds and sound illusions. Creating a confusion of sources, suggesting various acoustic spaces, evoking the sound of a sewing machine or a hard shoulder, making a rubbing sound sound like breath and making breath sound like creaking, this is the type of urge that stimulated collective research. The grand piano had to become a wind instrument and the clarinet a water instrument ; the pianist had to play percussions on a flute and the clarinet player had to play pan flute with a Laotian mouth organ; we had to test bowls with various diameters and velvet squares with various thicknesses, favour half empty batteries for the vibrator, unroll a copper reel from an electric motor to obtain a wire with the appropriate thickness. From inventions to discoveries, from surprises to disillusions, this project is also linked with the absurd, thrilling, and alchemical quest for new tones.
